St. Patrick's Breastplate

Happy St. Patrick's Day friends! I thought I would show you a sampler I made 3 years ago.  I stitched this for my youngest brother. We are only 1/8 Irish, but he is the most into it. ;)
I used a portion of St. Patrick's breastplaste. I do believe this is the more uncommon version of the verse. It rhymed well and looked good for what I wanted. The full prayer of St. Patrick, called St. Patrick's breastplate, is this:
I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity:
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

I bind to myself today
The virtue of the Incarnation of Christ with His Baptism,
The virtue of His crucifixion with His burial,
The virtue of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
The virtue of His coming on the Judgment Day.

I bind to myself today
The virtue of the love of seraphim,
In the obedience of angels,
In the hope of resurrection unto reward,
In prayers of Patriarchs,
In predictions of Prophets,
In preaching of Apostles,
In faith of Confessors,
In purity of holy Virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I bind to myself today
God's Power to guide me,
God's Might to uphold me,
God's Wisdom to teach me,
God's Eye to watch over me,
God's Ear to hear me,
God's Word to give me speech,
God's Hand to guide me,
God's Way to lie before me,
God's Shield to shelter me,
God's Host to secure me,
Against the snares of demons,
Against the seductions of vices,
Against the lusts of nature,
Against everyone who meditates injury to me,
Whether far or near,
Whether few or with many.

I invoke today all these virtues
Against every hostile merciless power
Which may assail my body and my soul,
Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black laws of heathenism,
Against the false laws of heresy,
Against the deceits of idolatry,
Against the spells of women, and smiths, and druids,
Against every knowledge that binds the soul of man.

Christ, protect me today
Against every poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against death-wound,
That I may receive abundant reward.

Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
Christ in the fort,
Christ in the chariot seat,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of an invocation of the Trinity,
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

Yeah, that makes a pretty long sampler doesn't it? ;) Sadly, my brother has never hung it. I have not seen it since. I am glad that I took that picture. I framed it myself. I stitched it two over two on 32ct white linen I believe. I got the border and shamrock from the pattern shown on the cover of the March 2011 issue of Cross Stitch & Needlework.

So that is all I had to share for today. Things are going well. Jacob had a week off of University last week after mid-terms. Brian and I took him to see The Lego Movie. :) Emerson had seen it with his friends. Jacob wanted to see it, so why not? Madeleine didn't care about it. The boys were lego fanatics when they were young. It was an innocent, fun movie.

I am stitching away on Theotokos. Trying to stay motivated on it. The bottom is completed now. I am working on the top now.

Hope you have a lovely day my friends. Thank you for stopping by. Your comments warm my heart.♥

Stitching and praying,
Vickie

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through the belief in the threeness,
Through the confession of the oneness
Of the Creator of Creation.
I arise today
Through the strength of Christ’s birth with his baptism,
Through the strength of his crucifixion with his burial,
Through the strength of his resurrection with his ascension,
Through the strength of his descent for the Judgment Day.
I arise today
Through the strength of the love of Cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In the service of archangels,
In hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In prayers of patriarchs,
In predictions of prophets,
In preaching of apostles,
In faith of confessors,
In innocence of holy virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.
I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me:
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s host to save me
From snares of demons,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.
I summon today all these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel merciless power that may oppose my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man’s body and soul.
Christ to shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me abundance of reward.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the threeness,

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I'm 0% Irish but I am fascinated by how Americans like to celebrate their Irish roots. I never realised that St Patrick's Day was such a big deal there until I started following blogs.

I think you did a great job of the stitching, maybe your brother just doesn't like to display his faith so openly? I'm sure he appreciated it was made with love anyway.

Love your little poodle at the end, you choose such great illustrations for your blog!

Lovely sampler :)
It's a shame your brother hasn't hung it up anywhere :(
My grandfather on my Mum's side is Irish, but unfortunately when his father arrived in Australia they changed their name and we have been unable to do a lot of research into our Irish ancestry.
Hugs xx

Isn't it wonderful that giving a gift is truly the best part? So what if they don't appreciate it as much. We get to feel the love of giving it.
You're awesome.
Thank you for always stopping by my blog, I love that you leave me comments :)
And I love the picture of you with your little poodles!

What a lovely sampler for your brother, Vickie... I know the feeling of not having my work appreciated, too. I spent hours and hours on a Noah's Ark birth sampler for my niece when she was born and it was never hung either. It made me sad, but at least I loved stitching it :)

Oh, my guys were Lego lovers, too--in fact my middle son still has his on display in his old bedroom. I'm about ready to insist he take them down so I can remove the wallpaper and make it into a proper guest room--he's been moved out for 6 years after all :)

Of COURSE, I love that sampler. I have a song that popped in my mind, that uses some of these verses "Make me an Instrument' by the Ragamuffin Band. But being 93.75% Irish, it is perfect! I grew up thinking we were 100% Irish, until I found out, doing the genealogy, that one of my paternal lines was NOT Irish but French/Cuban!! Surprise! It certainly explained a few things... I am coming back from being pretty sick and down for the count, so am behind in reading blogs... but I will catch up this weekend, cause I am NOT working!! Hugs!
